Dear Kindergarten Parents,
The Michigan legislature has recently amended legislation that changed the minimum age for a child enrolling in kindergarten or Young Fives. As of this year, a student must be five years old on or before September 1st to be eligible for enrollment in kindergarten or Young Fives.
Under the new law, parents have the option of requesting a waiver that their child attends kindergarten or Young Fives even if he/she does not meet the new September 1st deadline, but only if their child will be 5 years old before the previous December 1st deadline. The process for applying for a waiver is as follows:
- If the child resides in the school district, the notification form must be submitted to the school district no later than June 1st before the beginning of the school year.
- If the child becomes a resident of the school district after June 1st, the notification must be submitted to the school district no later than August 1st before the beginning of the school year.
- After receiving the notification form, districts can make recommendations to the child’s parent or legal guardian, as to the child’s readiness for school, and whether or not the child should be enrolled early.
- Regardless of a district’s recommendation, and as long as the age requirements described above are met, the parent or legal guardian has the right to make the final decision to enroll their child.
The following documents will be required:
- State Certified Birth Certificate with a seal
- Updated shot records
- Proof of residency (rent bill, phone bill, water bill, gas bill, etc. Something with your name and address)
- Results of a Hearing and Vision test
